J’ai récemment eu la chance de co-créer avec et pour la Nation naskapie de Kawawachikamach dans le cadre de l’aménagement d’un sentier promenade conçu par les architectes paysagistes CCXA. L’idée originale d’intégrer des sculptures figuratives de caribous ainsi qu’une murale en acier corten courbée a été proposée par cette équipe, afin d’offrir à la communauté une manière unique de raconter et de célébrer leur histoire. J’ai eu le privilège de développer ces éléments avec la Nation naskapie dans le respect des traditions et pratiques propres à la communauté.

I recently had the opportunity to co-create with and for the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach as part of the development of a boardwalk designed by the landscape architects CCXA. The original idea to incorporate figurative sculptures of caribou and a curved corten steel mural was proposed by their team, offering the community a unique way to tell and celebrate their story. I had the privilege of developing these elements with the Naskapi Nation in a manner that respects their traditions and cultural practices.
En février 2024, j’ai eu l’honneur d’être invité à Kawawachikamach, où j’ai rencontré des membres de la communauté et du conseil de bande. Ces échanges sur place ont permis de préciser le contenu et le style de la murale, qui reflète leurs valeurs à travers des animaux emblématiques, des éléments marquants de leur territoire et des références à leur histoire.
Parmi les éléments significatifs intégrés au projet figurent des motifs ancestraux naskapis, une représentation historique de la vue depuis Fort Chimo, ainsi qu’un extrait d’une œuvre d’un artiste naskapi, inclus avec l’accord de sa veuve en hommage à son héritage artistique. Mon style de découpe, proche de celui de cet artiste, s’intègre harmonieusement au projet en permettant de reconnaître des formes figuratives tout en évoquant des éléments naturels tels que des lacs ou des rivières.

In February 2024, I had the honor of being invited to Kawawachikamach, where I met members of the community and the band council. These on-site exchanges allowed us to define the content and style of the mural, which reflects their values through iconic animals, significant elements of their territory, and references to their history.
Among the significant elements integrated into the project are ancestral Naskapi motifs, a historical representation of the view from Fort Chimo, and an excerpt from a work by a Naskapi artist, included with the consent of his widow as a tribute to his artistic legacy. My cutting style, similar to that of this artist, blends harmoniously into the project, allowing the recognition of figurative forms while evoking natural elements such as lakes or rivers.
Chaque étape, des esquisses initiales à la composition finale, a été validée par le conseil de bande, garantissant que les sculptures reflètent fidèlement leur vision et leur identité. Ce projet a été une véritable collaboration où j’ai mis mon savoir-faire au service de leur histoire.
Lors de l’inauguration officielle, le 29 octobre 2024, le nouveau conseil de bande a exprimé sa reconnaissance pour ma participation, soulignant le dialogue respectueux et la co-création entre un artiste et la Nation naskapie de Kawawachikamach. La réalisation de cette œuvre a été une expérience profondément enrichissante, tant sur le plan personnel que pour mon travail et ma démarche artistique.

Each step, from the initial sketches to the final composition, was validated by the band council, ensuring that the sculptures faithfully reflect their vision and identity. This project was a true collaboration in which I applied my expertise to serve their story.
During the official inauguration on October 29, 2024, the new band council expressed their gratitude for my participation, highlighting the respectful dialogue and co-creation between an artist and the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach. The creation of this work has been a profoundly enriching experience, both personally and for my work and artistic practice.
